Here, you have some general information that we thought you’d like to know in case you want to join us.
HOW FAR AWAY IS TOWN?
Miller’s Landing is located on Lowell Point, about 2.5 miles south of Seward. It takes approximately 15-20 minutes to bike to downtown.
WHAT SERVICES ARE THERE IN SEWARD?
There are two supermarkets in Seward- Safeway and Three Bears. Three Bears is open: Monday-Friday: 7 a.m. – 9 p.m. and Saturday & Sunday: 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. Safeway is open daily from 5 a.m. – midnight. There is a pharmacy section in Safeway and they are open Monday-Saturday from 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.
There are a bunch of restaurants and a few bars in Seward where you can eat.
HOW FAR AWAY ARE THE GROCERY STORES?
Safeway and Three Bears are located at the north end of Seward. From Miller’s Landing it is about 4 miles to the supermarket. By car it’s about 10 minutes, about 25 minutes by bike.
WHERE TO FIND A BIKE IN SEWARD?
If you want to either buy or rent a bike you can go to the Seward Bike Shop. You can also check http://kenai.craigslist.org/ as sometimes you can find cheap bikes for sale here.
WHERE TO PURCHASE A SLEEPING BAG, POTS, PANS AS WELL AS CAMPING GEAR OR LINENS IN SEWARD?
There is a hardware store in Seward that sells most camping and cooking gear. However, new staff that have time to spare in Anchorage should get as much as possible there, as there is no sales tax in Anchorage and prices are generally lower.
WHERE TO STAY IN ANCHORAGE IF NEEDED?
We recommended Arctic Adventure Hostel, Jason’s Hostel and Spenard Hostel. They have low rates and you need approximately $20 for transportation from Arctic Adventure and Jason’s Hostel to airport or train station. Advance reservations are recommended. Also Walmart is within walking distance from these two hostels and sells bicycles, boots, sleeping bags, pads, camping gear, etc.
Traditional hotels range $50-75 and up that time of year so good strategy is to get red-eye flight into Anchorage and then have coffee at restaurant and take a taxi ($20) to the train station to be there at 6 a.m. Then you will have no big hotel costs.
TRANSPORTATION FROM ANCHORAGE TO SEWARD
The main alternatives to a car are the Alaska Railroad and Seward Bus Lines.
The train leaves Anchorage once daily at 6:45 a.m. and you must be there at 6 a.m. They will allow a bicycle but may charge extra. Miller’s Landing is able to obtain a 50% discount for staff.
