Kayak Self-Rescue and Skills Class

Quick Details

Exclusive Class Up to 4 students
$1200

We offer an exclusive class for folks looking to gain basic kayaking & safety skills or rent one of our boats.

Designed for folks looking to rent kayaks from us and gain more information and skills when it comes to kayaking in and around Seward and the National Park. For ages 16+

Miller’s Landing is an excellent place to learn sea kayaking basics and safety. We offer a Seward, AK sea kayaking class which provides a complete introduction to self-rescue techniques, and using the ACA’s standards, paddling criteria, and activities to make sure you are ready to kayak camp in the National Park or do an open water crossing from Caine’s Head to Fox Island.

Our class is a great way to acquire all the self-rescue skills needed to rent one of our kayaks. In this class, we will put you in a dry suit, and if we don’t have your size, a wetsuit and teach you to do a wet exit and paddle float re-entry, then move to practice more advanced paddling strokes as we kayak along the coast, dodging rocks and shallow beaches with strong currents. Afterwards, paddle back to Miller’s Landing where you will enjoy a delicious lunch catered by our own Cafe, and will discuss float plans, safety, weather, tides and much more with your guide. That way you are ready to have an epic as well as safe journey in our, or your own kayaks.

Please Note: This class does not grant you any formal certification but does follow ACA’s L2 curriculum. We have L2-certified instructors who can record this class with the association if you are an ACA member but cannot certify you as an L2 kayaker because the class is only offered as a single day. You will also need to perform two paddle float self-rescues on your own to pass that class if you are renting kayaks.
