Seward Alaska - Seward's Derbys
The Seward
Halibut Derby and Seward Salmon Derby
are big events in the small town of Seward. Fishermen come from miles
around to win cash prizes and merchant prizes. |
Halibut
Derby: The Halibut
Derby runs June 1 through the 30th. There is a winning fish selected
each week with a “mystery weight” selected randomly by a computer.
Each week there is a different weight. The fish that is closest to
the “mystery weight” wins. Altogether there are about $30,000 in
prizes to win. Miller’s Landing donates $2500 in prizes alone for
this special event. Miller’s Landing will be selling tickets during
the
Halibut Derby.

Silver
Salmon Derby:
The Seward Silver Salmon
Derby runs from the second Saturday in August
for 9 days, ending on the following Sunday at noon.
This is one of the largest sporting events in Alaska. There are more
than $250,000 in prizes for the derby, including $10,000 in cash for
the largest fish. There are thousands
of dollars to win in prizes daily, for mystery fish, largest fish in
certain categories, and tagged fish. The entry fee is $10 a day or $30
for the entire Derby. Seward Silver Salmon Derby Rules require everyone
on the boat to have a Derby ticket if they are fishing the Derby.
Therefore if you would like to participate in the Derby on a fishing
charter for silver salmon, please tell us at the time of the charter
that you want to participate in the Derby so we can be sure to group you
with other Derby participants on the boat you will be fishing from.
Miller's Landing is a main sponsor of the Seward Silver Salmon
Derby, donating over $2000 in prizes. Tickets may be purchased at
the Miller's Landing campground store for this event. |
