Miller's
Landing has the finest kayaking paddle School in all of
Alaska. The Kayak Operations Manager at Miller's Landing is
one of the only two A.C.A. (American Canoe and Kayak
Association) Certified Open Water Instructors in the entire
state of Alaska. Our course follows a rigid A.C.A. guideline
for instruction, to help you learn to paddle safely and
properly. We teach you everything from how to select a
kayak, basic chart reading, navigational techniques, tides,
waves, wind and weather knowledge; how to use a VHF Marine
Radio properly; paddling strokes, wet exit techniques,
landing techniques and more. Rescue techniques are
emphasized, and you will learn self rescue techniques as
well as group rescue techniques. Students are provided with
Dry Suits for practicing the wet exit techniques. The class
offers a lot of in the water actual experience; guided
paddles to reinforce what you have learned, and classroom
instruction as well. |
Day One
 The
Miller's Landing Two Day Intensive Kayaking Class
includes a progression from dry land presentations, to basic
chart reading, navigation techniques, tides, weather, local
area conditions, weather, VHF Marine radio operation, and
dry land wet-exits.
We then progress to
stroke techniques, kayak design and selection for the
paddler, boat transportation, boat launches and finally our
first water experiences. We practice the wet-exit technique
and break for lunch.
Following lunch, we go
back on the water, learning strokes and practicing
techniques. We will also take a paddle in the Lowell Point
area, have an overall discussion of ocean dynamics, and an
introduction of rescue techniques. We will also have a dry
land discussion and break.
Day Two
Day Number Two begins
with a review of our strokes and additional refinement of
our techniques. We will have a basic discussion of rescue
techniques and will begin our on-water practice. Following
this activity we break for lunch and get dry.
We return to the Bay and once
again take a tour of the area using our developed stroke and
navigation techniques, and complete our in-water rescue
sequences. Upon return to shore we will recap the course,
and discuss any additional questions.
Miller’s Landing Campground has campsites and cabins for you
to stay in while enrolled in the kayak school.
Custom classes for 4 or more may be
arranged during weekdays as well. Dry suits are available at
no charge the first day. For the second day if you wish to
have a dry suit it is $30 additional. |
