Kayak the Best Parts of Resurrection Bay!

Start by taking a water taxi ride from Miller’s Landing across the bay, then paddle in flat waters and gentle winds that make this a relaxing all-day trip. Plan to see anything from alpine glaciers, marine wildlife, lagoons, waterfalls, rock gardens and beautiful rocky beaches on this kayaking excursion from Seward.

This trip has two potential plans: the first trip is between Fox Island and Humpy cove and the other is between Humpy Cove to Thumb Cove. Depending on the weather, tides, season, or recent wildlife activity, each destination has time to shine. We have our guides choose the plan to help ensure the best experience for this all-day trip.

Humpy Cove

This is where the trip will begin, located closer to the mouth of Resurrection Bay, Humpy Cove is truly unique from cliffs that become coated in waterfalls in the rain and crystal-clear water, to rock gardens and migrating sea jellies looking for their next snack. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself in Humpy Cove scouring the cliffs in search of sea urchins or paddling under a waterfall after a good rain.

Fox Island

Fox Island is one of three barrier islands in Resurrection Bay. It has everything: temperate rain forest, sculpted cliffs, sea stacks, and a long-pebbled spit. If you find yourself kayaking along Fox Island, keep your eyes peeled for adorable river otters, oystercatchers protecting their nests or sea lions. Be sure to ask about the Island’s unique history!

Thumb Cove

This cove is sheltered from the wind and waves and braced by three gorgeous Alpine Glaciers, hanging in the mountains. Bald eagles, sea lions, and sea otters hunt prey; experience berry picking in the fall and more! This is a great introductory kayaking location with the benefit of sightseeing and getting away from the wind and chop — it’s generally very calm!

TIPS FOR A GREAT TRIP

Be sure to pack comfortable shoes that could get wet, and good layers. There is plenty of storage in the boats for spare layers, and other items if packed into small bags around 25 oz. Each guest also gets a dry bag to use during the trip if needed. Reach out if you have questions about gear.

Bringing a Camera? We use sit-in kayaks for this trip, you can have your camera around your neck or in a dry bag.

THE WATER TAXI RIDE

The water taxi ride takes 20 to 30 minutes depending on the weather, tides, and if we see any wildlife. While the water is usually calm, it can sometimes get bumpy if the weather comes in. We always do our best to make the ride comfortable, but we can’t control the weather!

We make a couple other stops during the water taxi ride to pick up or drop off other kayak groups, which does not take long. It’s always best when we have a full schedule, you get to see more parts of the bay!

DIFFICULTY

This is a moderately easy kayak trip, expect to see beautiful rock gardens, different geologic formations, wildlife, and views of alpine glaciers. We start kayaking at one location, like Fox Island, then kayak roughly 5 miles to a different location. Then you will get picked up by the water taxi and taken back to Miller’s Landing. This trip takes place in protected coves, and we will often plan the trip, so you are paddling with the wind.

WHAT WE PROVIDE

We provide all the necessary kayaking gear like life jackets, light and easy to use paddles, spray decks to keep your legs dry, very stable tandem kayaks, and all the necessary safety equipment.

Before each trip we provide a short orientation on sea kayaking and safety, so everyone is comfortable before we hit the water!

WHAT TO BRING

It’s important to wear quick drying, warm, synthetic layers or wool depending on the temperature and weather conditions. We ask that you avoid cotton clothing like jeans. Here is a small list of things to bring on your kayak trip in Resurrection Bay.

  • Warm synthetic/ wool layers
  • Rain gear
  • Water Bottle
  • Camera
