Miller’s
Landing charters
always include fishing for ling cod (in season), red snapper, black bass
and rock fish as part of our fishing targets on a halibut charter, and
our catch records are among the best in the Seward area.
Pacific Halibut
are the most desired and largest fish of Alaska’s sport fisheries,
ranging to lengths of 8 feet or longer. They are plentiful in our waters
throughout our fishing season of May through September. The record for
Alaska is a halibut 459 lbs and over 8 feet long. An eleven year old boy
caught a 340 pounder with us in 2000.
One
year, our largest halibut caught was a 285 pounder. Sport caught halibut
usually range from 20 to 50 lbs. , although larger fish are not uncommon. Generally we fish
between 100 and 450 feet, with an average of about 300 feet. It takes
about an hour and a half to 2 hours to get to the best fishing grounds.
We normally drift over our fishing areas, and then pull up, and move
back over it and drift again. Though we do drop anchor sometimes, we
don’t believe in anchoring and sitting on one spot all day.

Ling
Cod
season opens July 1st. Minimum legal is size 35 inches, can
grow to over 80 lbs. State record is 81 lbs. 6 oz. The limit is one fish
per day per person. Our biggest ling cod caught last year was 57 lbs.
Lings can be caught at almost any depth but we catch most of them at 15
to 150 feet. Many people prefer the moist, succulent, white meat of ling
cod to halibut.
Black Sea Bass
are both easy and fun to catch. They are the most prolific of the
rockfish species and are found near shallow rocky areas. Fishermen are
limited to five black bass per day. These fish average about 4 to 5
pounds but range up to 12 pounds. We normally fish for them using medium
weight spinning or bait casting gear, using hoochies and herring or
shrimp lures. These fish are great fun for the young kids and big kids
alike as they hit fast and furious. Sea bass (black bass) are delicious
to eat.

"Charlie Dodd, a member of Milo's Hit Team caught this one. It was the first and biggest caught. A 141 lb. halibut. We brought in more than 600 lbs and my 'little one' was 105 lbs. Anyone thinking about going fishing should consider Miller's Landing in Seward for the time of their life."

Red
snapper
(Yellow-eye Rockfish) are one of the tastiest fish we have, and the
limit is one per day. They are generally caught while fishing for
halibut and ling cod. As you can see there are a good variety of fish to
catch during a halibut charter, and all are delicious to eat. Last year,
our largest snapper caught was 22 pounds! State record is 38 lbs.
11 oz.
The
Seward Halibut Derby
runs from May 1st through August 1st. There is a $15,000 tagged fish as
well as many other prizes. There is a winning fish selected each week
with a “mystery weight” selected randomly by a computer. Each week there
is a different weight. The fish that is closest to the “mystery weight”
wins. Altogether there are about $30,000 in prizes to win. Miller’s
Landing donates $2500 in prizes alone for this special event. Miller’s
Landing will be selling tickets to the Halibut Derby from their
campground store.
