Miller's
Landing only chooses the best boats
and most experienced Captains to book your charters with. Here we will
describe a little about Mike Miller, owner of Miller's Landing, and his
boat. The F/V MICHAEL C.
The
Miller’s Landing fishing boat
is an aluminum, 32 foot twin diesel ex-commercial fishing boat with full
electronics and is piloted by Captain Mike Miller, Alaskan homesteader
and lifelong Alaskan. The boat has ample deck space for fishing, and
full electronics (fish finder, GPS, loran, radar). The cabin is heated
and there is a restroom (head) available on the boat. Our boats are some
of the fastest in the fleet. Traveling to the halibut and salmon areas
in record time allows plenty of time to fish on either a half or full
day fishing trip.
Charters are limited to six people for a more private
and individualized fishing. Because we moor our boat at the Landing
instead of the boat harbor, book directly rather than using a booking
agent, don't have the higher overhead of boats using these services, we
can often pass the savings on to the customer. So ask about early
booking discounts or special rates for larger groups. We also make
fishing reservations for almost all of the other top of the line boats, running six person
charters or 12-24 person charters, and will help place you on a quality
fishing boat when our boats are full.
About the Captain…
Captain
Mike Miller
is a lifelong Alaskan whose family homesteaded here (and survived the
1964 earthquake). Mike has been a fisherman, or marine engineer all his
life, and fishes at both commercial fishing and sport charter fishing.
Captain Mike grew up in a family of commercial fishermen. After a flood
damaged their home in 1957 the family spent five years on the remote
island of LaTouche where he and 5 other children were home schooled by
their mother, Penny. Returning to the homestead in the early 60's, they
weathered a fire in 1963 losing their home.

In the earthquake of 1964
the rebuilt home survived, but both commercial fishing vessels were a
total loss. In the summer of '64 the family started a campground and
boat rental business to make ends meet. Though the business was only
open for four years, it made such an impression on young Mike that in
1982 he started Miller's Landing. Fishing is a labor of love for Mike
and today he is considered one of the local experts. Our clients enjoy
fishing with Captain Mike while he shows them the waters and land he
knows so well. Sherrie (Mike's wife) is also a licensed Captain, and
helps out with the water taxi services.

The Miller's two sons (Chance and Tommy) both grew up on the homestead
too, and are also good fishermen. They sometimes deckhand for their
father on the charter boats, and are learning the fishing trade (which
is traditionally handed down through experience).
About the Deckhands …
Perhaps
the reason we do so well
on
our charters is because we have two Captains working for you on the same
boat! Capt. Mike Goff (acting as Deckhand)
was born in southern California. Grew-up fishing Catalina Island and the
Mexican waters. He then ventured to the Pacific Northwest where he lived
for many years fishing the San Juan Islands for all types of salmon.
After meeting his wife, Margee, they traveled to the Mariana Islands in
the South Pacific. For two years Mike was a captain taking tourists
fishing for Marlin, Wahoo, Yellow-fin Tuna, and Rainbow Runners. Mike
loves to fish and help others catch fish.

After The Charter…

Fish cleaning is complementary on
Miller's Landing charters
|
Miller’s
Landing will fillet your fish when the charter comes in and can package them and freeze them
in our freezer for you overnight. There is no set charge for this
service, although it is customary to tip the deckhand and Captain
whatever you feel is fair for the amount of fish caught and the time it
took them to clean the fish.
If you
need your fish sent home, smoked, or processed further, Miller’s Landing staff will be
happy to help you arrange this. We recommend three local fish
processors, and all three do an excellent job.
