Position:  Deckhand -  F/V MICHAEL C or M/V MICHAEL A
  Salary: $1500/month plus tips
Schedule: up to 12 hours per day, 5 days a week

  RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
• Maintain bait and tackle for fishing trips
• Clean and maintain vessel and deck gear including all safety and fishing equipment
• Assist with loading and unloading passengers and gear including fish
• Instruct passengers on vessel safety procedures and fishing procedure
• Assist as needed in general maintenance of vessel including oil changes and repairs
• Assist with fish filleting and cleaning
• In charge of refueling and re-supply under Captains direction
• Maintain an accurate count of fish caught, fish released, hours fished, number of clients & enter all into ADF&G daily fishing Logbook

        
TRAINING      The deckhand is expected to become familiar with all aspects of vessel operation and safety including but not limited to:
 
  Boat handling
Mooring/Anchoring
Bilge Pumps
Engines
Hydraulics
Stability
Navigation
Radio Procedure
Safety Equipment
Fire & Emergency drill
Navigational Charts
Rules of the Road
Common Fish Species
Bag Limits
All ADF&G Rules & Regulations
     for the areas of operation

  SUPERVISION   The deckhand works directly under the supervision of the captain of the vessel

  JOB REQUIREMENTS

Deckhand Requirements:   Deckhand Must:
 
• Current CPR and First Aid certification

• Pre-employment drug test and enrollment in Maritime Consortium random drug test program by Miller's Landing (cost of pre-employment drug test is paid by employee)

• Fishing deckhand - Current year Alaska sport fishing license

• Become familiar with electronics, marine radio procedures, local weather

• Be able to help with regular scheduled maintenance on vessels and emergency repairs while underway

• Be able to work fast in an emergency and knowledgeable in rescue/towing techniques

• Must be knowledgeable about refueling

• Must keep a good watch of marine traffic and navigational hazards.

• Must be able to give safety presentation to clients, and keep a sharp eye for safety hazards.

  • Be in good physical condition and able to lift up to 100 lbs or more

• Be able to work on the ocean without getting sea-sick

• Be willing to work long hours and any days scheduled

• Be able to fillet fish or be willing to learn

• Be able to drive skiff/outboard/tender as needed

• Become knowledgeable on history of Resurrection Bay and Kenai Fjords National Park

• Become familiar with marine wildlife and habitat, to include whales, birds, sea lions, sea otters, eagles, etc.

• Work with, entertain, instruct and converse with people from varied walks of life

• Must be willing/able to participate in all drills

Deckhand Pluses:  Any and all fishing experience, Any and all marine/boating experience,
A positive attitude and friendly disposition

  COMPENSATION
• Fishing vessel deckhand is a salaried position per agreement with Miller's Landing
• All tips are split 50/50 with Captain
• Any other compensation (seasonal bonus etc.) per employees agreement with Miller's Landing

  OTHER CONDITIONS
• This job description is intended to be comprehensive however any other responsibilities or duties prescribed by the Captain of the vessel shall be deemed to fall within the scope of the job whether or not they are specifically addressed here.
• Deckhands generally do not get many days off and the hours are long. A genuine passion for fishing and the sea plus the ability to keep smiling under adverse conditions are valuable assets.
